Your First Appointment

How does the therapy process work?
It is sometimes easier to speak with a professional who is outside of your family and friendship group.

During the initial appointment we will attempt to gain a full understanding of you, your difficulties, and your situation.   This is not really a counselling session but more of an assessment of your presenting problems.  We will then work with you on developing goals and identifying issues you wish to address and changes you wish to achieve.  You may be asked to complete some homework tasks throughout the course of therapy, such as implementing strategies taught or undertaking self-monitoring tasks.  Together we will regularly review your progress and goals.  Psychologists may employ differing therapeutic approaches in their work, including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).  A collaborative approach is crucial and ongoing feedback about how you are finding the process is most welcome.

Standard consultations are of 50 minutes duration.  The frequency of sessions will vary depending on your issues and level of help required, and this will be discussed with your treating psychologist.
